Journey to the East. - Taipei (2)

Of all the countries and cities I travelled over the years, somehow Taipei is the only city that I feel very safe. Walking in the city at night is a delight, where all the stalls are closed or closing and their owners are getting ready for the next day; there is always so much politeness, gentleness in the manners of the people, be them a taxi driver, assistants at a station or in a hair salon, or staff at the hotel reception.

I think this reflects in the everyday beauty of the city and all the craft shops dotted in all corners of the city. If there is so much intention and intensity of making a pot, a cafe, a room, a piece of accessory, a cup of sweet iced tea, a waiting area beautiful, it tells the intention of living a beautiful everyday life.

Beauty resides and awakes us when we live or visit a place that is well looked after and nurtured. When I discovered there is an artist village running residency programs in this city, I dreamt and thought that I could happily join the residency, to have the opportunity of really breathing in this city, to have the time to visit every place running on the HST line from Taipei, to Taizhong ( centre Taiwan), and to Tainan (the South).

Somehow the city has the magic to awake in me the longing to explore further, to see the villages depicted in the films by Hou Hsiao-Hsien, to feel the verses of the poet Xi Mu-Rong, to listen to the stories by the singer Luo Da Yu, and now to experience the deep joy and love of the Taiwanese artists that I met in the gallery space and in the everyday street stalls . I think this city is a fine example of how a city should feel like; it breathe care, wonder, and a warm intention of living a good and whole life.
